HD-DVD introduce In 2006 by Toshiba. It created a breathtaking experience every time you turned on a movie and it was affordable. Unfortunately, it was not going to last because at the same time Toshiba came out with there HD-DVD, Sony began building a new BluRay technology.

Now, we find ourselves faced with a new technology. What is BluRay? BluRay name comes from the Blu Violet laser which is used to read and write this type of disc. Blu-violet laser has the shorter wavelength and it means more data can be stored on a Blu ray Disc than on a DVD. A standard DVD only 4.5 GB of data can be stored but a Blu ray Disc has 25 Gigabytes can be stored on a single layer and 50 Gigabytes can be stored on a dual layer. More features, extended versions can be on one disc.

What about my old DVDs? if not High def quality, well cheer up because BluRay has the ability to upconvert your standard DVDs to near high-def. So you will also see your old DVDs better.

How is it different from the standard DVD? To read the information, DVD’s use a red laser and the blue ray discs use a blue ray laser. Blue ray technology can store far more information, almost 5 times more storage that the traditional DVD because a blue laser the wave length is shorter.

The disc had to be made more durable and was somewhat bulky because the discs were much easier to scratch. Now, there is polymer coatings have advanced allowing for a better protective coating to be placed on the disc.

Some of the big companies are fighting over which technology, Blue ray technology or a HD DVD should be used. Blue ray and the HD DVD players are continuing to improve. Finally, they both may be successful with consumers because consumers may discover that they enjoy both types of players.
